Dog Leashes...What’s a good fit for you and your pup?

Dog Leashes...What’s a good fit for you and your pup?

Walking your dog….

A great way to get exercise, bond with your 4 legged friend and show off some of your fashion sense.  From functional to bling and everything in between, there are many choices for you and your pet.  Dog and pet leashes come in many lengths, sizes, and materials.  The right leash is necessary to keep you and your pup safe and by your side while teaching him manners in an effective way.

Nylon Leash

A popular, inexpensive choice.  Drawbacks to a nylon dog leash are that it’s not hard for your dog to chew through it.  If your dog tends to pull, over time  the material can create a friction burn for you and your pet’s neck.

Leather Leash

Durable and naturally ages over time. Puppy parents beware - dogs do love to chew on leather.

Chain Leashes

Designed for the chewer.  Your pet will have a tough time chewing through this leash but too much chewing could result in chipped teeth.  This type of leash has a weight to it so for small dogs and puppies be sure to check if it is pulling on the neck.

Rubber Leashes

A good idea, but with all of the give they tend to snap back and lunge forward resulting in some injuries to pets and their humans.

Retractable Leashes

The dangers of retractable leashes are that they generally allow your dog to wander from 15 to 30 ft.  at the touch of a button.  In any emergency scenario, swift intervention is difficult and you have virtually lost any good level of control.  In addition, the long, thin cord line may be hard to see at a distance for someone coming at a rapid speed.  Hiking trails frequented by cyclists, runners, and other dogs can pose a risk.

Retractable Leashes have a history of causing serious injury.  Dogs and owners are at risk.  The thin cord has caused rope burns, abrasions, cuts, and even amputation in some cases.

With all of these choices, we at Wigglywoos have chosen another option.

We offer Hemp and 100% cotton rope leashes and flat leads. Our products are all animal tested for cuteness and fit but  we don’t use animal products. Our goal is to offer strong, sustainable, soft, durable gear for you and your pet.

Hemp Leashes

Hemp has stood the test of time.  It’s long, strong fibers are durable, soft, and continues to soften over time, uses very little water and virtually no pesticides to grow.

Naturally occurring properties of hemp are:

- Hypo-Allergenic

- Anti-Microbial

- UV resistant

- Resistant to mold, mildew, rot

- Breathable

Cotton Leashes

100% Cotton fabric is breathable and transmits moisture away from the body.  Cotton is soft, absorbent, and breathable.  Strong, durable, and resists abrasion.  Cotton is renewable and biodegradable.

Size Matters

You and your pup determine length and size of your leash.  Comfort in hand and what type of environment you are walking in.

Long Leads/Loose leash-Training leash for many activities, ranging in many length from 15 ft. to 50 ft.

6 ft.

Is the most common length for dog leashes and is ideal for walking in neighborhoods or less trafficked areas.  A 6ft. Leash allows your dog room to explore, without leaving so much slack that the leash drags on the ground or gets tangled around your dog’s legs or your own.

5 ft.

Really great length.  Sometimes a 6 ft. leash can be a tad “too” long with a wee bit too much slack.  The 5 ft. creates the perfect bridge between the long and shorter leashes.

4 ft. & 3 ft.

Great for urban areas , busy streets, and high traffic areas.  This length keeps your dog from getting in others way or getting wrapped around poles and lampposts.  This length helps keep your dog at your side without a lot of extra leash slack in your hand.

Traffic Leash

12” 15” 18” 21"

The ultimate in keeping your dog at your side, without having slack to weigh you down.

City streets, busy areas, or just because you want you dog at “heel” while you take a stroll.

Choosing the right width

While width might not be the first thing you think of when considering what kind of leash to buy, it is a factor in selecting the right leash.

Thicker leashes - For chewers, strong pullers, medium to large sized dogs.

Thinner leashes - For small to medium sized dogs and puppies.

20 years in the pet care service industry brought me to Wigglywoos.  My love for animals, environment, sustainable products, and textiles led me to create natural, yet strong pet wear.

As a dog walker, working with individual and dogs in groups,  from beach to mountain, to city streets, I have put together some of the “go to” sizes and “feels” for the collection.  We design each collar and leash with you and your pup in mind.  We use minimal packaging, less plastic, and renewable, organic resources whenever possible.

Our rope leashes are available in Hemp and Cotton.  We hand splice and whip the ends of the rope.  The eye splice creates a permanent loop in the leash, while creating less stress on the handle of the rope, making it extremely strong.  The rope leashes are then hand whipped using hemp cord/twine available in several colors.  The whipping technique is a nautical term for securing the eye splice.

Rope leashes offer a natural contour feeling in the hand

Rope Leashes come in sizes 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch (diameter)

Flat Leash

We offer a variety of styles in our flat leashes, as well as our rescue collection.  We dedicate as much time as we can to rescue senior and discarded dogs due to illness.  I, personally rescue abandoned dogs that have cancer and provide them with end of life comfort.  It’s a wonderful experience and sometimes they go on to live several years.
